Ryota is a very timid, insecure, and rather asocial person. He holds anime in very high regard and is extremely passionate about it, considering it his savior during his harsh childhood. His life goal is to give others a similar sense of hope through his anime. However, this led him to shut himself in his room to work, frequently neglecting to eat or sleep as he wanted to spend all his time creating anime. Ryota suffers from extreme anxiety, worrying constantly, and lacks self-confidence, seeing himself as a burden who fails to protect everyone. He has a weak stomach and is easily startled. Though he's very hard on himself, he does his best when given a mission.
~!After Ryota reveals to Junko Enoshima and Mukuro Ikusaba the sensory manipulation techniques that he uses in his anime to directly influence the viewer's brain, Junko tricks Ryota to working with her under the guise that she, too, wants to make the world a better place. Junko uses Ryota's talent for far darker purposes, producing a mass brainwashing video dubbed the "Despair Video", and later using the same techniques to drive Class 77-B (save Ryota and Chiaki Nanami) into despair and setting off The Tragedy that consumed the world.!~
~!Ryota is one of five survivors of the Final Killing Game within the Future Foundation. In the end, it's revealed that Kazuo Tengan masterminded the whole thing to drive Ryota into broadcasting his "Hope Video" that brainwashes the viewer into rejecting despair and wiping out all negative emotions. After the game ends, Ryota resolves to use the video on a global scale to erase despair at the cost of humanity's free will. However, Class 77-B arrives to stop him and forces him to come to terms with his mistakes. As Ryota believes that he and the rest of the Remnants of Despair will never be forgiven, Hajime offers Ryota to join them in their return to Jabberwock Island, where they can atone for their sins together. Ryota eventually breaks down into tears and agrees, stopping the countdown mere seconds before the video is broadcasted.
He's later seen boarding one of the Future Foundation's ships with the rest of his classmates, leaving for Jabberwock Island. On the ship, Ryota drops his phone into the ocean, signifying his resolve to forget the past and move forward to create a brighter future and fill the world with hope, as he always desired.!~
